Boundary of Knowing

The edge of what can be known — named, so that everything inside it can be said with confidence and everything beyond it can be approached with honesty.

Every knower has one. A person's is set by their senses, their instruments, their language, and their life. A body's is set by what its members have between them. A species' is set by the shape of the apparatus it came with. The boundary moves, and it never disappears (Boundaries and Limits of Conception, Epistemology, The Ineffable).

Naming it is not a counsel of despair; it is what makes confidence possible. A tradition that refuses to say where its knowing ends must defend everything equally, and so ends up defending its guesses as fiercely as its findings. One that draws the line can hold what is inside it firmly, hold what is beyond it lightly, and tell the difference out loud (Current Best Understanding, We Do Not Know, Limit Statement).

Three things live at the edge and should not be confused. What is not yet known — inside the boundary in principle, waiting for work. What cannot be known by this knower — beyond these instruments, this vantage, this kind of mind, though perhaps not beyond another. And what cannot be contained by knowing at all — the ineffable, which is not a gap in information but a difference in kind, approached by participation rather than by description (Mystery, Types Of Knowing, Gnosis, Essences, Renderings, And Ineffable Referents).

Its discipline is the honest sentence. We do not know is not a failure of the canon but one of its instruments, and a body that can say it retains the ability to find out. The opposite discipline — the confident answer where there is none — is how a living understanding becomes a doctrine (Navigating Towards Truth, Shoshin, Do Not Concretize the Absolute).
