Darkness

The unwritten pole opposite light: not a substance of its own, but what is there where light is refused, withheld, or has not yet reached.

The oldest reading, and the one this canon keeps, is that darkness is a privation rather than a rival power. It is not co-equal with light; it has no independent existence, makes nothing, and can only ever be the absence or occlusion of what does. That is not a consoling technicality — it is what makes the darkness answerable at all, because what has no substance of its own cannot finally win (Evil, Distortion, The Fall).

It takes three shapes worth distinguishing. There is the dark that has not yet been lit — ignorance, the unknown, the part of the map nobody has walked. There is the dark that is withheld — information kept, questions unanswerable, a body deliberately kept from seeing (Control Of Information, Kontrolle, Ideological Capture). And there is the dark that is chosen — the turning away, in a being that could see and prefers not to (Sin, The Dark Initiate Failure Mode, Inversion).

Only the third is what people usually mean by the word, and conflating it with the first two does enormous damage. Not knowing is not wickedness. Being kept in the dark is not the same as choosing it. A great deal of cruelty has been done by bodies that treated the ignorant as the guilty (Discernment, Zero Blame Environment, Speaking Truth In Love).

There is also a darkness that is not an enemy at all: the dark of soil, of the womb, of sleep, of the fallow season, of the unknowing that precedes real knowing. Growth happens in it. A tradition that hears only threat in the word has flattened something it will later need (Rest And Regeneration, Compost, Mystery, We Do Not Know).
