The Giants
What stands between a people and the land of promise: the powers that look unopposable from the edge of the wilderness.
At the end of a crossing, the scouts come back with two reports. The land is good, and there are giants in it. Both are true. The Giants name the entrenched powers — concentrated capital, captured institutions, weaponised information, the sheer scale of what would have to change — that make the new world look, from the boundary, like somewhere that cannot be entered. They are not imaginary, and the corpus does not shrink them. The old order is large, well-funded, and unwilling.
The concept is load-bearing because it names the specific moment at which a movement most often stalls: not in the caves, and not in the trials, but at the threshold, when the destination is finally visible and the obstacles resolve into detail. A people that has not been told about the giants reads their appearance as disqualification. A people that has been told reads it as the expected last test.
The response the corpus gives is asymmetric rather than heroic. What actually dissolves a giant is the withdrawal of what it feeds on — attention, energy, and consent — together with a working alternative that people can move into. Demonstrate before advocating; hospice the old rather than fight it; build alongside. The Sacred War is the wider frame, and its discipline applies here too: the giant is a pattern wearing institutions, and it is met without hatred and without illusion.
In the Game the giants are met locally and specifically long before they are met at scale. A Cell that intends one real thing in one season will find the particular giant standing in the way of that thing — a permit, a landlord, a monopoly, a habit of the place — and the Quest becomes the encounter. In the initiatory walk the same shape appears as the backlash that arrives when the boundary is crossed: the old does not let go silently.
