Nota ao pé — as palavras sagradas em português

Céu. Heaven toma a palavra mais próxima da tradição de língua portuguesa: o Céu, e o Céu na Terra para Heaven On Earth. Escolheu-se Céu e não Paraíso porque Paraíso é um lugar noutro sítio, um jardim para onde se vai, enquanto o Céu do Jogo é uma condição a ser realizada aqui, um pouco mais a cada semana. O preço da escolha é que céu em português é também o céu físico sobre a cabeça; a maiúscula e o artigo — o Céu — carregam a distinção, tal como em inglês.

ØNE. Não é traduzido nem transliterado, em lugar nenhum da tabela. Fica ØNE, com o Ø. Um, O Uno, Deus — cada um destes já é uma outra palavra com a sua própria história. Onde a linha inglesa diz the Ones of the ØNE, o português diz os Uns do ØNE: a forma derivada traduz-se, o Nome não.

Célula · Círculo. Cell é a Célula, no sentido biológico — uma parte viva e plenamente funcional de um corpo maior, não a cela de um cárcere nem a célula de uma conspiração. Circle é o Círculo: a forma da reunião, pares sem cabeceira de mesa. Mantêm-se separados em todas as linhas, porque no Jogo um Círculo ainda não é uma Célula. A palavra mais antiga Ring é o Anel, e nunca círculo.

Missão. Quest é a Missão. Demanda seria o termo literário para a busca cavaleiresca, mas hoje lê-se como pedido ou procura de mercado; busca é interior demais. Missão carrega o que é preciso: uma coisa real, escolhida, com um fim visível — e que uma Célula pode apontar depois.

Turno · Giro. The Turn tem dois sentidos no cânone e o português separa-os. A reunião semanal é o Turno — a vez de cada um, o revezamento. O gonzo único do Arco Sagrado e os quatro momentos do ano em que o Jogo vira são o Giro e os giros. Uma língua que os confundisse perderia a diferença entre o ritmo e a viragem.

Temporada. Season é a Temporada — cerca de noventa dias, de um giro do sol ao seguinte. Estação diria a estação do ano, que é o que o Jogo justamente não conta: a temporada é a volta do Jogo, medida pelo sol e não pelo clima.

Chama. Flame é a Chama, e Pass the Flame é Passar a Chama. A imagem é a de acender outra vela: quem passa não perde nada, e quem recebe recebe tudo.

Oferenda. The Offering é a Oferenda — o que cada pessoa põe no meio da mesa, livremente, a cada semana. Não oferta, que em português comercial é um preço; não doação, que faz de quem recebe um necessitado. Oferenda é o gesto ritual, dado a um centro partilhado.

Portador. Carrier é o Portador: quem te trouxe a Chama, e a Célula de onde veio. Não muda nunca. Transportador seria uma máquina; padrinho inventaria uma autoridade que o Jogo não dá a ninguém.

Célula-Lar. Home Cell é a Célula-Lar, e Home é o Lar. Casa ficou para House — o grupo que joga e aprende junto. Lar é o que sustenta, escuta e ajuda; casa é onde se joga.

Supercélula. Supercell é a Supercélula — três ou mais Células que se tornaram o lar umas das outras. A palavra existe em português na meteorologia; aqui é usada no sentido biológico da composição, e supercélulas formam supercélulas.

Proposta. Proposal é a Proposta — um jeito melhor, escrito numa frase e enviado para cima na Folha de Temporada. A palavra é deliberadamente comum: qualquer pessoa pode fazer uma.

O que não passou inteiro. Algumas coisas não rendem em português e é honesto dizê-lo. Throughput foi vertido por Rendimento, que em português também diz salário e eficiência — o sentido de «ritmo a que a Meta é de facto cumprida» tem de ser sustentado pela definição, não pela palavra. Commons ficou Bens Comuns, plural onde o inglês é singular. Stewardship ficou Custódia, que é mais jurídica do que o inglês e menos calorosa. Play e Move caíram em Jogada e Movimento, duas palavras que em português se sobrepõem mais do que em inglês. Kontrolle, LUV, TimeEnergy, Player+, Chatham House, Shoshin, Shu-ha-ri, Kairos, Chronos, Dialogos, PKAI, ØSphera e LIØNSBERG ficaram como estão. Livingry, a palavra que Buckminster Fuller inventou contra weaponry, foi vertida pela invenção paralela Vivamento; não é português corrente e sabe-se disso. E o registo desta tabela é um português neutro, legível de ambos os lados do Atlântico, que usa tu — em partes do Brasil dir-se-ia você, e a mesa que jogar nesta língua deve ajustar o tratamento à sua própria boca.

Foot note — the sacred words in Portuguese

Céu. Heaven takes the nearest word in the Portuguese-speaking tradition: o Céu, and o Céu na Terra for Heaven On Earth. Céu was chosen over Paraíso because Paradise is a place elsewhere, a garden one goes to, whereas the Heaven of the Game is a condition to be realized here, a little more each week. The cost of the choice is that céu in Portuguese is also the physical sky overhead; the capital and the article — o Céu — carry the distinction, as they do in English.

ØNE. Neither translated nor transliterated, anywhere in the table. It stays ØNE, with the Ø. Um, O Uno, Deus — each of these is already another word with its own history. Where the English line says the Ones of the ØNE, the Portuguese says os Uns do ØNE: the derived form translates, the Name does not.

Célula · Círculo. Cell is a Célula, in the biological sense — a living, fully functioning part of a larger body, not a prison cell and not a conspirator's cell. Circle is o Círculo: the form of the gathering, peers with no head of the table. They are kept apart in every line, because in the Game a Circle is not yet a Cell. The older word Ring is o Anel, never círculo.

Missão. Quest is a Missão. Demanda would be the literary term for the knightly quest, but today it reads as a demand or market demand; busca is too inward. Missão carries what is needed: one real thing, chosen, with a visible end — and one a Cell can point to afterward.

Turno · Giro. The Turn has two senses in the canon and Portuguese separates them. The weekly gathering is o Turno — one's turn, the taking of turns. The single hinge of the Sacred Arc and the four moments each year at which the Game turns are o Giro and os giros. A language that conflated them would lose the difference between the rhythm and the turning.

Temporada. Season is a Temporada — about ninety days, from one turning of the sun to the next. Estação would say the season of the year, which is precisely what the Game does not count: the temporada is the round of the Game, measured by the sun rather than by the weather.

Chama. Flame is a Chama, and Pass the Flame is Passar a Chama. The image is the lighting of another candle: the one who passes loses nothing, and the one who receives receives everything.

Oferenda. The Offering is a Oferenda — what each person puts in the middle of the table, freely, each week. Not oferta, which in commercial Portuguese means a price; not doação, which makes the receiver needy. Oferenda is the ritual gesture, given to a shared centre.

Portador. Carrier is o Portador: the one who brought you the Flame, and the Cell they came from. It never changes. Transportador would be a machine; padrinho would invent an authority the Game gives no one.

Célula-Lar. Home Cell is a Célula-Lar, and Home is o Lar. Casa was kept for House — the group who play and learn together. Lar is what holds, hears and helps; casa is where the play happens.

Supercélula. Supercell is a Supercélula — three or more Cells that have become one another's home. The word exists in Portuguese meteorology; here it is used in the biological sense of composition, and supercells form supercells.

Proposta. Proposal is a Proposta — a better way, written in a sentence and sent up on the Season Sheet. The word is deliberately ordinary: anyone can make one.

What did not render whole. Some things do not carry into Portuguese, and it is honest to say so. Throughput became Rendimento, which in Portuguese also says salary and efficiency — the sense of "the rate at which the Goal is actually accomplished" must be held by the definition, not by the word. Commons became Bens Comuns, plural where the English is singular. Stewardship became Custódia, more juridical than the English and less warm. Play and Move fell to Jogada and Movimento, two words that overlap more in Portuguese than in English. Kontrolle, LUV, TimeEnergy, Player+, Chatham House, Shoshin, Shu-ha-ri, Kairos, Chronos, Dialogos, PKAI, ØSphera and LIØNSBERG were kept as they stand. Livingry, Buckminster Fuller's coinage against weaponry, was rendered by the parallel coinage Vivamento; it is not standing Portuguese, and that is known. And the register of this table is a neutral Portuguese, legible on both sides of the Atlantic, which uses tu — in parts of Brazil one would say você, and a table playing in this language should fit the address to its own mouth.
