Addiction
A compulsion that survives the person's own decision against it — named in the canon with a particular framing: recovery as an initiatory arc.
The framing matters more than the definition, because the framing decides what a community does. Read as moral failure, addiction produces punishment. Read as pure mechanism, it produces management. Read as an initiatory arc, recovery becomes a passage a person walks and comes back from carrying something — which is what the twelve-step rooms, named in the canon among the Pattern's own Earthly lineages, have demonstrated for a century. The Twelve Irreducible Elements were drawn in part from those rooms: small groups, one voice each, sponsorship, no one in charge, the whole thing given away free.
It is load-bearing because the Pattern already runs on the structure that recovery discovered. A Cell of three to thirteen who say what they will do and report the gap without blame, who put something in the middle of the table, who keep a Carrier relationship with whoever brought them, and who pass what they were given to the next person — that is a description of both. Sponsorship and the Support Group are named in the field for this reason. What a Circle can offer someone in recovery is the very thing it is already built to be.
In play the limits are as important as the offer. A Circle is not treatment; a well-meaning group that takes on a physical dependency it is not equipped for can do real harm, and withdrawal from some substances is dangerous. The floor of care applies first — when a member is in danger in body or in mind, act first, record later. Fasting and other subtractive practices are not detox. What the Circle reliably provides is the thing that relapse most often follows the loss of: a table with your name on it, every week, where you are expected.
The canon holds this as a named gap, not a method. Trauma, Mental Health, and addiction are listed together as territory surfaced and not patterned.
