Support Group

A small gathering formed around a shared difficulty rather than a shared Quest — where the work is carrying one another rather than producing anything.

A support group is a Circle with a different purpose. It has the same bones — a few people, a regular time and place, ground rules agreed out loud, a facilitation that gives every voice room, confidentiality, honest speaking, and mutual practical and emotional help — and it exists because some things cannot be worked on alone and are not projects.

It is load-bearing for two reasons. First, it is one of the Pattern's own Earthly ancestors: the twelve-step rooms are named among the lineages from which the Twelve Irreducible Elements were independently derived, and much of what the Game does at a table — the round, the honest account, the commitment, the sponsor, the passing on — came from bodies of this kind before it came from anywhere else. Second, a community that can only organize around production will have no form for grief, addiction, illness, or the collapse of a life, and those are a large fraction of what people actually carry.

In the Game, the distinction to hold is that a Cell plays and a support group holds; a Cell that discovers its members need holding more than they need a Quest should say so plainly and change what the hour is for, rather than pretending the Quest is going well. Many bodies run both, on different nights, with overlapping members. In the System, the support group is one of the fellowship forms a Community resources from its commons, and it composes with the rest by the ordinary law of voluntary associations.

The mental-health and addiction ground beneath it is honestly named as thin in the written Pattern — madness as misrecognized initiation, recovery as an initiatory arc, the dark night of the soul — and those pages do not exist. What exists is the form of the room, which has been working for a century.
