Andon (the clocked pull)

Any hand may stop the work the instant it judges something wrong — answered inside a window matched to that hand's own rhythm, and rising one level further if the window closes unanswered.

The practice comes from a production line where any worker, on their first day and without earning it, may pull a cord when something threatens the quality of the work. The pull calls whoever is nearest above, and the window they have to answer in is the length of the worker's own cycle. Only if that window closes without resolution does the line actually halt. The point is not the halting; the point is that a fault is surfaced the moment it is seen instead of being passed downstream.

Three details carry the whole thing, and all three are usually the ones bodies drop. The authority is granted, not earned — the newest person has it. The window is matched to the puller's rhythm, not to the answerer's convenience, because an alarm answered next week is not an alarm. And it self-escalates on silence: nobody has to chase anyone (Stop, Every Defect Is A Gift, Zero Blame Environment).

It is load-bearing because it makes stopping cheap and therefore possible. Where stopping is expensive — in standing, in embarrassment, in having to justify yourself — people do not stop, and known problems travel all the way to the end of the line, where they cost a hundred times more and by then belong to nobody. A Cell that never hears a pull is not a Cell without problems (Speaking Truth In Love, Composure Under Threat).

Escalation here is not failure; the work stays valid while it is being answered. Only genuine non-resolution halts anything.

It must be held apart from its larger sibling. The canon already carries the andon cord as a governance mechanism — any member of a body may raise an alarm at corruption, capture, or drift, and is protected rather than punished (Structural Immunity, Whistleblower Protection). That is a matter of a body's integrity. This is the small, clocked, everyday pull at the work in front of you. Same root, different scale, and they should not be collapsed.
