Last Planner System
The lineage the commitment discipline comes from: the planning and promising of work is done by the people who will do it, on the front line, week by week.
Its name is its argument. The last planner is the person closest to the work — the one whose hands will do it — and the promise that matters is theirs, not a schedule handed down. From that one move the rest follows: plan pulled backward from the milestone, a look-ahead window in which constraints are found and cleared, a weekly promise of what will be done, a record of what was, and a measure of promises kept. SHOULD-CAN-WILL-DID is its cycle; Kept as a share of made is its number.
It is load-bearing as a lineage rather than as a doctrine. It is named here because the discipline was not invented in this canon: it was found in the production systems that build the largest works on Earth, tested on billion-dollar programmes, and carried across intact because it survives translation to a kitchen table. Honouring the lineage without owning it is the rule — the pattern is discovered, not invented, and the people who found it are named.
What it changes is where authority sits. A command loses fidelity at every level it descends; a promise made by a sovereign who understands the work and stakes their own word carries its full weight. That is why a body runs on Networks of Commitments rather than a chain of instructions, and why the same method that keeps a construction programme honest can be held in a notebook by three people.
