The Causal Stack — Always Look Deeper

Consciousness → perception → thought → word → action → fruit. Observe the fruit; then read back up the chain.

Those who look at the surface of things stay perpetually confused. The instrument the canon offers is a six-rung ladder and a direction of travel.

Downward is how things come to be. A state of consciousness produces a way of perceiving. That perception produces thoughts. Those thoughts produce words. The words produce actions. The actions produce fruit — the visible outcome, which is the only rung most observers ever look at (Consciousness, Pattern Recognition).

Upward is how things are understood. Start at the fruit, because it is what is available, and read back: what action produced this? What words preceded it? What thoughts were being spoken from? What way of perceiving generated those thoughts? And what state of consciousness makes that perception the natural one? At the top is the spirit or essence the whole thing has been manifesting from (Root Causes, Sensemaking, Discernment).

It is a diagnostic, not a sentiment, and the direction of reading is what makes it one. Intervening at the fruit changes one outcome. Intervening at the action changes a class of outcomes. Intervening at perception changes what a person even sees as available. That is the whole argument for why this canon addresses spirit before pattern and pattern before procedure (Spirit Precedes Pattern, Theory Of Constraints, Trim Tab).

It is also a discipline of fairness. Reading up the chain means an outcome is not treated as a character verdict: the fruit reports a state, and states change. Anyone can be met at the rung they are actually on (Zero Blame Environment, The Pattern Governs, Not People).

The instruction is one word repeated, and it is the canon's whole posture toward surfaces: always look deeper.
