Theory Of Constraints
Every system's throughput is set by one constraint at a time. Improving anything else improves nothing.
The insight is unglamorous and hard to act on. A system has a bottleneck; the bottleneck determines what the whole can deliver; effort applied anywhere else produces local improvement and no change in the result. Which means most of what a busy Body does to get better is wasted motion — and the discipline is not working harder but finding the constraint, relieving it, and then finding the next one, because there always is a next one.
It is the production lineage behind the Elements of building, and it arrives with the rest of the Lean inheritance: Value as throughput of the Goal and Waste as its complement; Value Stream Mapping to see where flow actually stops; and the weekly practice that operationalizes it — look six weeks ahead, ask of each coming activity what could stop it from being ready, give each constraint an owner and a date, and release only constraint-free work (Make-Ready Process · Constraint).
Its governing rule is the one the Way states in its own words: optimize the Whole, not the pieces. A Body of sovereign Cells each improving itself will produce a collectively constrained result unless someone is reading where the whole is actually stuck, which is what Critical Path and computed Float are for — and why The Two-Stake Principle matters, since only a member who holds a stake in the Whole will look for a constraint that is not in their own Cell.
The translation of it into a Body's life is simple: ask what one thing, if it moved, would let everything else move — and do that, before the many things that feel more urgent.
