The Chasm

The gap the old order is tumbling into — the third named place, beside the Caves and the Wilderness.

The Caves are where a people lives without knowing it is in the dark. The Wilderness is the hard, open ground between leaving and arriving. The Chasm is neither: it is the drop, the discontinuity the existing arrangement is carried over by its own momentum, while everyone aboard continues about their business (The Train of Civilization, Collapse, The Meta Crisis).

What distinguishes it from ordinary trouble is that it is not survivable by improving the thing that is falling. A system in difficulty can be reformed; a system going over an edge cannot be reformed on the way down. That is the whole force of the image, and it is also its danger — because the same image, held badly, produces fatalism, and fatalism has never built anything (Hell On Earth, The Way Out).

It is load-bearing because it names the stakes without naming a date. The Story's claim is not that a particular year is the end; it is that a direction is being travelled and that direction has an edge in it. What is asked of a person is not to predict the fall but to get off the trajectory and help build the thing on the other side (Liberation and Exodus, The Promised Land, The Timeline).

And it is the place the turn happens. In the Story the Guide appears at the last possible moment, just as the first cars tumble — not before the danger is real, and not after it is too late. Whatever else the Chasm is, it is the reason the Story is not a tragedy (EuCatastrophe, The Guide's four renderings, Kairos).
