Awe
The contemplative family: awe, wonder, reverence, tranquility. What a being feels on meeting something larger than their capacity to contain it.
Awe arrives when scale exceeds grasp — the field, the sky, a life, ØNE. Wonder is its open, questioning form; it is the beginning of inquiry rather than its end, and the canon keeps it close to beginner's mind. Reverence is awe that has become an orientation: awe and humility before the sacredness of Life, held as a way of standing rather than a moment. Tranquility is the settled state that follows, which is why this family sits nearest to stillness.
Read as information, awe reports proportion. It tells a being the true size of what they are dealing with, and it is corrective in a specific direction: a Sovereign in awe is not the centre of the scene. This is why it is structurally protective. Capture by one's own mastery, the elevation of a founder, the hardening of an articulation into doctrine — each requires that something finite has quietly taken the position only the infinite can hold, and awe is the felt refusal of that (The Golden Calf · Shoshin).
It also does honest epistemic work. Mystery is named in the canon as what transcends comprehension and must be entered rather than solved; The Ineffable is the discipline of not crowding what cannot be said; we do not know is a sentence a Body says out loud. Awe is the emotion that makes those bearable rather than shameful.
Reverence extends the family outward to the living world: kinship with all beings, the seat held for living systems, the refusal to treat the Earth as material. It is also the mood of the pause before speaking — the practice that asks whether a word improves the silence it breaks.
