Joy

The body's report that something is right. Five states kept distinct: joy, happiness, mirth, aliveness, excitement.

Joy is deep and often quiet — the sense that one is where one should be, doing what one should be doing, with whom one should be doing it. It does not require good circumstances and it is not the absence of grief; the two can sit in the same hour. Happiness is lighter and more circumstantial, the pleasant register of things going well. Mirth is shared and bodily — laughter, which the canon treats as a real move rather than a break from the work. Aliveness is the field around an encounter feeling more alive, and it is one of the canon's named readings of associative energy. Excitement is activation toward something coming.

Emotions are information, and joy reports as reliably as fear does. Aliveness in a room is data about whether what is happening there is integrating or fragmenting. Its absence is data too: a Body doing everything correctly with no joy in it is being told something, and the thing it is being told is usually that the work has drifted from the reason for the work.

This is why celebration is not decoration. It is a move of the Game — celebrate, learn, and improve — and it is a Pillar in its own right. A season closed without celebration loses half of what the season was for. Communal time is named as the heartbeat of a healthy society, and the winning is not waiting at the end: every kept word, every fed neighbour, every child who learns the world can be trusted is winning now.

The discipline is the same as for every other emotion: feel fully, read accurately, respond to what is reported. Joy responded to means doing more of what produced it.
