The Standing

Remaining in conscious engagement with what is in front of you without being captured by it — which requires having integrated fear and, less obviously, fascination.

The standing is named by its failures, and the list is useful because each failure looks like competence from inside. Someone who perceives something large and is shaken by it has not completed it. Someone who engages and is moved off centre has not completed it. Someone who receives something and takes it for their own thinking has not completed it. What the standing actually is: stability of the centre, anchored beyond oneself, unshaken by whatever arises.

It is cultivated rather than possessed, over years, through repeated engagement with progressively deeper layers in the presence of someone who has been there — and through two integrations.

Fear, which is the expected one. A person who has not made peace with their own fear cannot stand cleanly; the fear does the deciding, quietly, before they know a decision was made (Fear, Composure Under Threat, Courage).

Fascination, which is the non-obvious one and the reason this page exists. The one who is fascinated by a thing is also captured by it. Wonder is a capture like any other: it fixes attention, it flatters, it makes a person want more of the encounter for its own sake. The trained posture is matter-of-fact about what it meets. Its own test follows from that — not was I afraid but did I want it to continue? (Capacities Are Not Pursued, Restraint's Two Tells).

The mark of it is that both extremes become ordinary. What would terrify an untrained person is met with calm recognition and a clean response; what would overwhelm them is received with reverence and equal calm. The standing does not make the encounter smaller; it makes it workable (Awe, Reverence, Holding Paradox).

At ordinary scale it is the same capacity a person needs in a room where something charged is happening: to stay, to feel it accurately, and to remain the one deciding.
