Dance

Embodied movement in resonance with rhythm, Spirit, and the pulse of Creation — the body's own way of knowing, and an open gap in the canon.

Dance is the art that cannot be done at a distance. It requires a body, in a place, in time, usually with other bodies, and it leaves no artefact. That is precisely its function: it moves understanding out of the head and into the tissue, where it is actually held. What a people knows in its bones it learned by moving, and a movement whose members have only ever thought about the Pattern has not yet embodied it.

It is load-bearing as the clearest case of the canon's own claim that knowing has kinds. Types Of Knowing and Gnosis name knowledge that is not propositional; dance is that knowledge in its most ordinary and least mystified form. It is also one of the few practices that reliably produces coherence in a group without anyone discussing anything — the same work Music does, with the body added. Embodiment is the whole point of the three-layer architecture the canon describes, and dance is embodiment that does not need translating.

In play it is simple and mostly absent. A Festival that moves is different in kind from one that sits. A Community with dances of its own has something that cannot be taken from it, copied out of it, or administered. A Cell can walk together, move together, or dance badly together, and it will learn something about itself that no Retrospective surfaces. Walking, martial practice, and the physical tier of The Daily Way sit in the same family.

The canon is honest that almost nothing is written. Sacred dance and sacred theatre are named among the significant gaps, along with chant, drumming, and song, and the entry says plainly that the Patterns are needed. There is no LIØNSBERG form of dance and there should probably never be one imposed: this is precisely the territory where local tradition already holds the craft and the Pattern's job is to make room for it.
