Community

A coherent field of belonging and co-creation rooted in shared rhythms and a shared place — about ten thousand people, anchored by the three hundred who hold it.

Community is the scale at which a people becomes visible to itself: large enough to hold every trade a life needs, small enough that the relationships are real rather than statistical. In the nesting of scales it sits above the Microlocality and below the Mediolocality, and the working number is roughly ten thousand. What makes it a community rather than a population is shared rhythm — the same week, the same turnings, the same table manners — and a shared field of agreements freely entered.

It is load-bearing because it is the smallest whole that can carry a civilization's full function. A Cell can do real work; only a community can school its young, heal its sick, steward its watershed, and feed itself. It is also the scale at which the three percent arithmetic becomes concrete: three hundred anchors in ten thousand people is enough to hold space, demonstrate the alternative, and walk the rest through. See The 300.

In the Game, a community is what a ring of Cells becomes when enough of them are one another's Home: the sheets meet, the supercells form, the seasonal turning becomes a gathering rather than a meeting. In the System, it is the body a Community Company constitutes — founded in six steps by a steering committee that dissolves its own founding authority, chartered in nine sections, seating living systems, future generations, and the Whole alongside its human members, each of whom holds one voice and, from the first day, a stake in the Whole as well as in the local body. Roles rotate, because a role held forever quietly becomes a throne.

A community is not a jurisdiction and does not own the people in it. It is a membrane with a door in both directions: freely entered, freely left, nothing clawed back. What holds it is not authority but rhythm, kept promises, and the fact that the neighbours are real.
