Vagus Nerve

The main nerve of the calming branch of the nervous system — the communication highway between brain and body, and the physical path by which a person can turn their own alarm down.

It is the principal nerve of the parasympathetic system: the branch that rests and restores, as against the branch that mobilises. It runs between brain and body in both directions, carrying far more traffic upward from the organs than downward, which is part of why states of the body are felt as states of mind (Embodiment · The Energetic Anatomy · Wellness).

The canon's interest in it is specific and practical. Relative to escaping anxiety and reaching positive feeling, it is this nerve that carries the signals from the front of the brain down to the body which dial down the energy level in an otherwise default-on alarm system. That single sentence is why it is worth a page: it names a physical route from deliberate act to changed state, in a body that otherwise runs its alarm without asking (Fear · Mental Health · Composure Under Threat · Mastery Of Emotions).

Which converts several of the canon's practices from advice into mechanism. Slow breathing with a long exhale, stillness, unhurried speech, singing and chanting, cold on the face, and — more than any of them — being with people who are calm: these are the ordinary handles on that route, and they work on the body rather than on the mind's opinion of the situation (Breath · Silence And Stillness As The Ground · Rest And Regeneration · Music · Dance · Sleeping · Ritual).

It also explains why composure is trained rather than summoned. A person cannot reason their way out of an alarm state while the alarm is running, because the reasoning part is the part that has been turned down; what can be done is to act on the body first and think afterwards (Discipline · Safety check · Trauma · Healing).

And it bears on how a body treats each other. A room where people are safe is not a courtesy; it is the physiological precondition for anyone in it thinking clearly (Zero Blame Environment · Trust · Circle Coherence · Having Difficult Conversations).
