Mass Wilderness
When whole peoples are in passage at once — the crossing as a mass condition rather than an individual ordeal.
The patterns of The Wilderness were first described for a person and a Circle. Mass Wilderness names what changes when the passage is simultaneous and general: when the institutions that would normally carry people through a transition are themselves in the transition, when the guides are only a few steps ahead of those they guide, and when there is no settled society waiting on the far side to absorb the crossing.
It is load-bearing because it is the actual situation this corpus was written into. Collapse and its paired ascension describe the outward circumstance; Mass Wilderness describes what it does to people at scale — disorientation as a population-level condition, trust scarce, meaning-making systems failing faster than they are replaced. A movement that assumes an intact background society will make commitments it cannot keep. One that assumes mass passage builds differently: smaller units, more redundancy, provision held in common, and no dependence on anything the old arrangement must continue supplying.
The companion pattern named beside it is helping others through, and it sets the posture. In a mass crossing nobody is fully past; the one a little further along holds the door rather than rules the column, and anyone who has crossed one stretch is qualified to hold that stretch for the next person. This is the same shape as The Loop That Has No End and as the office of the Guide — met in a time when the number of people needing a hand exceeds the number of anyone's credentials.
In the Game it is why Pass The Flame is not optional and why the arithmetic of hand-to-hand spread matters: a crossing at this scale cannot be staffed centrally. In the System it is the argument for the self-governing body of a place — the Community scale — and for Mutual Aid within it, so that provision does not depend on a centre that may not be there.
