Establish the interior first; the exterior follows. Form arises from the field, not the field from the form. Technique is downstream of cultivation.

Every external move is the expression of an interior alignment. The hand that strikes is downstream of the alignment that powers the hand: a strike from a fragmented being arrives weak even when the technique is correct, and a strike from a coherent being arrives clean even when the technique is rudimentary. The word that heals is downstream of the field the speaker holds — the same words spoken by different beings produce different effects, because the capacity is not in the words. The decision made under pressure is downstream of the discernment built into the whole instrument across years, because there is no time to reason it out in the moment.

The Pattern names the diagnosis for any practitioner whose results are not matching their effort: more technique, more strain, more deliberate force applied at the local layer, when what is missing is the substrate the local was supposed to arise from. That is pushing water around on the surface of a lake with one's hands.

Every technique reaches its ceiling at the level of the underlying alignment. A being who has mastered alignment absorbs and improvises technique rapidly, because technique is only the local expression of what the alignment already knows. A being who has mastered technique alone plateaus and cannot pass the plateau by adding more of it.

The forces are honestly stated: local moves are visible, measurable, correctable, and teachable, while the substrate must be felt and cultivated on long feedback loops. Which is why the slower-looking path is the faster one, and why disciplined form practice — which does cultivate the field, partially — is treated as legitimate and insufficient. The fastest path is both at once, held in the right order.
