Room Types

A growing set of rooms, each shaped once and improved by every body that keeps one: the Big Room · the Gathering · the Gate · the Commons · the Dojo · the Chamber · the Studio.

A body lives in rooms the way an organism lives in organs. Each has a purpose, a shape, a Tender, and the few instruments that purpose needs on the rack. The Way kept several of these long before it named the genus, and naming it is what lets a room be shaped once, offered to anyone, and improved by everybody who keeps one — instead of each group inventing its own weekly meeting from nothing.

The Big Room is where a body sees its whole world at once and coordinates in it. The Gathering is the weekly Heartbeat: what was said, what was done, what was learned, what is next. The Gate is where a person crosses from outside into the Game. The Commons is where offers meet requests and stories are shared. The Dojo is where the arts of the Way are practised. The Chamber is where a council or the assembly decides by consent. The Studio is where the Story is rendered in image, sound, and word.

It is load-bearing because a purpose without a place dissolves. Groups that intend to reflect, to welcome, to practise, or to decide, and have no room for any of it, end up doing all four badly in one meeting — and then conclude that meetings do not work. A type is a small gift: it tells a new Cell what to set up, what to put on the rack, and what the hour is for (Kit of Parts, The LIØNSBERG Toolkit).

The set is explicitly unfinished. A type is added when a body meets a purpose it has no room for; a type is retired when nobody needs it. Types are discovered in use rather than decreed in advance, which is the same law the canon applies to Cell Types — and for the same reason: a map drawn ahead of the territory becomes a cage the moment anyone believes it.
