The Ecclesia

The gathered body itself — the assembly of the called, in its worshipping and its deciding form, one of the rooms the Game keeps.

The Calling of the Ecclesia is the door: how people are named by their neighbours and asked to lead. The Ecclesia is what they become once gathered. The old Greek ekklēsia meant the governing assembly of a city — those called out of their houses into the square to decide and to do — and only later narrowed into something merely religious. Both halves of the word's life are kept here on purpose, because the assembly the Way needs is one that can worship together and decide together without either act embarrassing the other.

In its deciding form it meets in a chamber, by Consent, with the decisions and their reasons written where anyone may read them. It convenes; it does not command. What it can bind and what it merely gathers is not the same question, and the body is careful with the difference (Consent-Based Decision-Making, Decision Records, Legitimacy).

In its worshipping form it is the same people turned toward the same centre: the gathering where thanks is given, the Story told, the dead remembered, the turning marked. This is not decoration around the governing. A body that only ever decides becomes an administration; a body that only ever worships becomes a congregation waiting for someone to act. The Ecclesia is the form that refuses to choose (Celebration, Festival, Remembrance).

It is load-bearing because it is where a Movement stops being a network and becomes a people. Cells are small, local, and sovereign; the Ecclesia is the moment they stand in one place as one body, see how many they are, and hear what is being asked of them all (Cell of Cells, The Movement, Federation). Like every room the Game keeps, it has a Tender who keeps its purpose, its language, its doors and its record — and who rules nothing.
