The Annual Deep Review

The long look, once a year: revisit the far light, and ratify any change to the founding agreements only after a full year of living under them.

Four beats hold a body — the day, the week, the month, the season. The year is the fifth, and it is the only one slow enough to do two particular things.

Revisit the Beacon. Ten years out is the horizon seasons are chosen against, and it is deliberately fixed so that a turning changes the work and not the direction. Once a year it is legitimate to ask whether the far light is still the one this place is walking toward — whether the decade has taught something the first writing could not know.

Ratify what a year has proved. This is the deeper function. A body does not write a perfect charter in its first season; it cannot, and the attempt paralyses it. So the founding rhythm is: adopt the Charter provisionally, live under it for four full seasons, and ratify — or amend — only after you have felt where it holds and where it chafes. A constitution earned through a year of practice is worth more than a flawless one written in a weekend.

That is why the annual review is the only place a change to the founding agreements lands. It puts a year between a tension and a permanent rule, which is exactly the interval that stops a hard season from rewriting a body's constitution, and stops a comfortable one from never revising it at all. No absolute is minted in the heat of the week it was felt.

The year is also where a body can see the things only a year shows: who walked the whole of it, what was actually built, what was released, and whether the place is measurably more like Heaven than it was four turnings ago.
