The LIØNSBERG Calendar

The breath of the year — roughly twenty-eight deliberate days on which practice extends, Circles gather more fully, and a scattered people breathes together.

The Calendar is the layer of rhythm above the week and below the lifetime. It has two clocks in it. The lunar clock gives twenty-four inflection days a year: twelve new moons, each a planting — what is being sown for the next twenty-eight days — and twelve full moons, each a fullness and a release — what has come to ripeness, what is ready to be let go. The solar clock gives four: the two equinoxes, which are balance, and the two solstices, which are extremity and the turning toward the other. Twenty-eight days in all, set inside three hundred and sixty-five daily walks and some fifty-two weekly gatherings.

It is load-bearing because it is how a distributed body synchronizes without a centre. A new moon is a new moon everywhere; the December solstice is the December solstice in Norway and in Patagonia, whichever season it opens there. As more Circles keep the Calendar, the rhythms align across continents on their own, with nothing coordinating them but the sky.

In the Game, the four solar anchors are the turnings and carry the season's work; the lunar days carry practice rather than obligation — a longer stillness, a deliberate beginning, a deliberate release, sometimes a candle or a meal or time outdoors. At the Community scale the solstices and equinoxes become the largest gatherings of the year. In the System, only the solar turnings bind anything: the Game's clock is solar, and the lunar layer is practice that a body may keep or not.

The Calendar does not replace anyone's existing festivals. Easter near the spring equinox, Christmas near the December solstice, Diwali near a lunar inflection, the lunar observances of other traditions — these hang inside the frame rather than being displaced by it, and the refined lunar and solar knowledge that many indigenous traditions hold enriches the frame rather than being overwritten by it.
