The LIØNSBERG Book of Conventions
Where the writing conventions live: recommendations at the top of the holarchy, never laws, refined by the experience of all who write.
The Book of Conventions holds the handful of practices that keep a shared body of writing coherent when many hands are in it. Every convention in it is held as a current best practice — a recommendation, not a rule imposed — and every one of them is there because its absence was felt.
The conventions it gathers are the ones this domain turns on: name the concept in the singular, so that one page answers to one thing; link to the concept and not the coordinate, so that a link survives the file being moved; the incipient link, which lets a concept be named with a link before anyone has written it, creating the topology first; semantic capture, the warning that the page at a name becomes the meaning of every link to it, so writing a thin page at a big name does real damage; the wiki reflects the present, so a page says what is true now rather than narrating its own history; everything is a project; and we have heard, the form for acknowledging what came in.
Beside the Book sit two companions that carry mechanics rather than meaning: the capitalization and style protocol, which settles how the load-bearing names are written, and the page on how we write here, which carries page maturity and the suggestion process. Among their practices is the one every reader meets: READ THE STORY · PLAY THE GAME · PASS THE FLAME is set in capitals when the three are said together as the charge, and in ordinary case when a sentence is merely talking about reading, playing or passing.
The book is small and is meant to stay small. A convention earns its place by being the thing a new writer would otherwise get wrong, and it is retired the day it stops being that.
