Careful Editing of the Core

Read the core before you edit it — so that a body of writing keeps one voice, and each hand that touches it moves the material toward that voice rather than adding another.

A shared body of writing has one great failure mode: it becomes a patchwork in which every section sounds like whoever wrote it, and a reader spends their attention on the seams instead of the meaning. The repair named here is not a style guide. It is familiarity — everyone who edits the core should know it well enough to speak in its voice, or at least to come close, after which group editing carries the material the rest of the way (The LIØNSBERG Voice · Coherence · Be the canon, don't narrate it · Author's Voice Is Sovereign).

So reading the core comes first, and that is a real cost. The practice offered for shrinking it is curating: take a part of the core, alone or with others, work it down to what it actually says, and when it is ready make that the executive summary of the thing it curates. The body then has a shorter way in, and the person who made it has read the core by making it (Curating · Bottom Line Up Front · Foundational Literature · Chunking).

Two ordinary habits carry the rest. Ask questions — privately if that is easier — and fold the answers back into the material, so that what confused one reader stops confusing the next (Asking Questions · Request For Guidance · Communication Debt). And comment rather than overwrite, beside the line rather than over it, with the ability to process and answer comments quickly treated as a skill worth developing (Comment · Second reader · Play by Play).

The word doing the most work in the title is careful. The core is what everything else is measured against, so an edit there is not equivalent to an edit anywhere else; it is the move that most deserves slowness, a second reader, and a stated reason (Decision Records · Progressive canonization · The Wiki Reflects the Present · Soak).
