Capacities Are Not Pursued

Capacity arises from alignment; it is never the aim. Going after the powers for their own sake is a primary drift — and having few of them is not a lesser walk.

The canon states the causal order and then refuses to let it be reversed. Capacity is a by-product of right alignment: the conduit clears, and what flows through it does more. Which means it cannot be taken. Someone who goes after capability directly is working on the wrong object and, worse, has adopted the aim that turns formation into acquisition — the precise route by which a cultivated person becomes a danger (The Dark Initiate Failure Mode, Right Use of Power).

Two rules are the portable part of this page.

Non-pursuit. Cultivate the alignment; let capacity surface when and as it is useful to what is being served. The test is honest and blunt: am I doing this practice for what it makes possible in the work, or for what it would make me? (Aligned Will, Conduit, The Realization Arc.)

Proportionality of worth. Someone who has cultivated alignment and manifests very little visible capability is no lesser than someone who manifests a great deal. The point is the faithful walking; capacities serve that service when the service requires them. Without this second rule the first is empty — a body that quietly ranks people by what they can do will produce pursuit no matter what it teaches (Proportionality, Dignity, Size of role, size of person).

The same reversal wrecks ordinary things. Study pursued for standing rather than understanding produces neither. Practice done for the state it induces stops producing the state. Service performed to be seen serving is not service (Shoshin, Recognitions Are Not Titles To Be Sought).

There is also a plain caution the canon gives about forcing inner development faster than the whole person can carry: what is opened ahead of the formation that supports it does harm.
