The landing sequence

What to do on arriving mid-story: remember who you are and what this is for, become present, orient, engage, plan and adapt, move, and learn — in that order.

Nobody starts at a beginning. A person arrives partway through something already unfolding, in a particular place and time they did not choose, with no blank slate available. The sequence is what to do about that, and the order is the argument (Position, Context · Internal Context · External Context, Our Story).

Remember comes first — who we are, and what the whole thing is for — because the choice of what one is aiming at precedes and shapes what one is able to perceive. Orienting before remembering means orienting by whatever the surroundings suggest (Remembrance, The Goal, Narrative Lens, Spacetime User Interface).

Be present second: the story being lived is not elsewhere or in the future; it touches ground here, now, through this person (Here and Nøw, Nøw, Silence And Stillness As The Ground).

Then the familiar four. Orient — where am I, what is actually going on (Navigation, Sensemaking). Engage — enter it rather than survey it (Do the Work, Participation). Plan and adapt, held as one motion because a plan that cannot adapt is a wish (Pull planning, The look-ahead, Anti-Fragility). Move, with everything you have, toward it (Commitment, Critical Path). And learn, improving the quality of every one of the preceding steps (Continuous Improvement, Retrospective, Celebrate, Learn, and Improve).

Its distinctive contribution is the first two. The field already carries two cycles for acting well — one that begins with observing, one that begins with attending — and neither has a step for remember who you are or arrive in the present before the observing starts. That is what this adds, and it is the part most easily skipped by anyone competent (Observe · Orient · Decide · Act · Learn, Attend, Plan, Act, Learn, Improve Cycle, The Five Moves).

Three named cycles now exist in the corpus, with overlapping steps and different names, and none is reconciled with the others.
