Threshold

The liminal zone between one state and the next — and the design claim that it must be built on purpose rather than left to happen.

A threshold is where a crossing occurs: between outside and inside, stranger and member, before and after. Architecturally it is the porch, the gate, the doorway a body slows down in. Socially it is the moment a person stops being a visitor. Psychologically it is the passage where an old identity is set down and a new one has not yet been picked up.

The claim of this Pillar is that thresholds are always designed — by someone, or by neglect. A building with no threshold dumps the street into the room. A community with no threshold makes belonging a matter of who guessed the unwritten rules. A life with no marked passages leaves its transitions unattended, which is why the canon names rites of passage among its largest gaps: birth, coming of age, elderhood, death.

The Game builds its thresholds explicitly. The door is a real one: the terms are read there, agreement is given in a person's own words where others can hear it, silence is never a yes, and anyone may leave in peace at any time — the gate does not close behind them. That is a designed liminal zone. It costs a few minutes and it decides what membership will mean for everything that follows.

The word carries a second, larger sense in the field, and the two should not be confused. Boundary in its larger sense — the line between the Old World and the Wilderness — is a threshold crossed not once but in dozens of small irreversible acts across months. The same design principle applies: pace the crossings, name the backlash in advance, and let the Cell hold the one crossing.
