Boundary
A conscious limit set to protect what is sacred and to keep relationship possible.
A boundary is a line someone decided on. That is the whole of it, and it is why boundaries are a guardianship concern rather than a governance one: the deciding is an act of protection, and it is done by the one whose ground it is.
Boundaries are not the opposite of relationship; they are its precondition. Without a limit, a person or a body has nothing to offer but everything, and what follows is not generosity but depletion, then resentment, then withdrawal. A clearly stated line makes an honest yes possible, because a yes from someone who cannot say no is not consent. This is why the freedom to leave is written into every agreement here — a door that opens outward is what makes walking in mean something.
The living form is the Selectively Permeable Membrane: a boundary that breathes, filtering what crosses while honouring the sovereignty on both sides, rather than a wall that keeps everything out. What a body decides about visibility, privacy, and safety is a boundary decision made on purpose instead of by default.
The word carries a second, larger sense in the field. The Boundary — with the article — is the line between the Old World and the Wilderness, crossed not in one dramatic act but in dozens of small irreversible ones, paced so the crossing can be absorbed rather than reabsorbed.
At the table it is ordinary and daily: what I will do and what I will not, said plainly, in advance, without apology or accusation. Both halves matter. A boundary announced as a grievance is a weapon; a boundary stated as information is a gift to everyone who now knows where you actually are.
