Rites of Passage

The named initiations across a life — birth, coming of age, the first vow, the vision quest, elderhood, death — and one of the corpus's most honestly flagged gaps.

A life has thresholds whether or not a culture marks them. Where they are marked, a person crosses with witnesses and knows what they have become; where they are not, the crossing happens anyway, unnamed, and is often mistaken for breakdown. The corpus names the missing rites explicitly: the rites of birth, of coming of age, of elderhood, and of death, together with the first vow and the vision quest, and states that under several Pillars there is work no one has written yet. This is one of those places.

The gap is load-bearing precisely as a gap. A civilisation pattern that can govern, produce, and learn but cannot receive a child, mark an adult, honour an elder, or accompany a death is not yet a civilisation pattern. The corpus is unusually direct about this — Dying, Giving Birth, and the passage it calls madness misrecognised as initiation are all listed among what is named and unarticulated. Naming an absence is a form of integrity, and it is also an assignment.

What already exists gives the shape of an answer. Initiation is defined as passage into new realms of responsibility and authority. Belt Progression holds that a witnessed mark shows that you did a thing when it counted, and that meeting requirements never confers it. Celebration and Ritual sit under the Pillar of time and rhythm. Whoever writes the rites will be assembling from those, in a place, in a tradition — and should write down what they built so the next community need not begin again.

In the Game the practical instruction until then is small and real: mark what happens. A Cell that names a member's crossing at its table, however plainly, is doing the first form of this work, and what it learns is worth sending up as a Proposal.
