Asking Questions
The instrument of orientation. A Body is steered far more by the questions it asks itself than by the answers it has collected.
A question sets the frame, and the frame decides what counts as an answer. How do we grow faster? and what would make this a little more like Heaven? will be answered with equal sincerity and will build different worlds. This is why the canon keeps its central instruments as questions rather than as rules: the compass question before every move; the elders' second question when two moves both pass it — is this the highest thing we could do right now, for ourselves and for the whole?; and the daily triad of the co-creation moves, what is mine to fill, to improve, to remove.
The craft has recognizable parts. Frame the question cleanly, so it asks one thing. Ask the open question before the closed one, and the what and how before the why, which tends to summon a defence. Ask what you have not understood before you say what you think. And leave the silence after it — a question that is answered by the asker was not a question.
Two failures are ordinary. The rhetorical question, which is a statement wearing a question's clothes and is felt as such. And the interrogation, which collects positions rather than understanding; its tell is that the asker's picture never changes.
It composes with everything in the Voice section and depends on Listening, because the next good question comes out of what was just heard rather than from a prepared list. And it is the practical form of We Do Not Know: a Body that can say out loud that nobody here knows, and then ask well, is a Body that can learn.
