Honoring Lineage Without Lineage-Capture

Honour the stream that received you. Refuse the capture. Five signs tell you which one is happening.

Honouring is concrete: the names of those who passed the transmission are remembered, the forms are practised, and the stream's particular vocabulary is held as the local language by which something universal first became audible to this body. None of that is being questioned.

Capture is what happens when the vehicle becomes the destination — when the lineage's standing has quietly become the practitioner's own. The five signs: the founder idolised; competition with other streams; refusal to recognise the same principles when they appear in someone else's vocabulary; the lineage's reputation defended against legitimate critique; and the lineage's authority raised above one's own relationship with the centre (Institutional Idolatry, Ideological Capture, Idolatry (of the word and of the doctrine)).

The fifth is the root of the other four and the one with teeth. It generates the rule that makes this more than a warning: a transmission from inside one's own lineage may be refused if it violates the vow — because the vow is anchored in the centre and not in any teacher's authority (The Warrior's Vow, Sovereignty Of Consciousness, Receiving Transmission).

The test the canon offers for one's own position is the shadow-and-gift test: a faithful practitioner of any stream can name the lineage's shadow as readily as the lineage's gift. Anyone who cannot has already been captured, whatever they say about open-mindedness (The Ten Universal Principles Across Streams, Shoshin).

And the structural version, which applies to whole bodies: a lineage that holds itself accountable to something above itself produces faithful practitioners; a lineage that demands ultimate loyalty to itself produces the failure it fears most (The Pattern Governs, Not People, The Four Warrior-Guild Capture Modes).

Cross-training is named as a remedy rather than a betrayal, and the canon is explicit that it is not infidelity — it is the deepening recognition that the streams are one (Progressive Illumination, Weaving vs. Starting New).
