Collective Inheritance

The wisdom, knowledge and ideas of everyone who has gone before — which belongs to all of us, and which gathering up is an opening move rather than a scholarly hobby.

The argument is made by walking the chain of a single idea. Someone is brought into existence by ancestors, raised by others, formed in a community, studies work others did, uses infrastructure others built, and then through real personal effort has a thought. The thought is shared, improved by others, and becomes something real. Who owns the product of that? (Synergy, Gift, Lineage, Reciprocity.)

The question is not rhetorical and the answer given is not nobody. It is that what came through the chain is stewarded rather than owned, and distributed across everyone who made it possible — which includes the dead, who cannot be paid, and the unborn, who are the reason the question matters (Stewardship, Agency, not ownership, Knowledge as commons, Covenant Across Time).

From which comes the sentence the corpus repeats: the stewardship of wisdom, ideas and knowledge matters more to a new world than the stewardship of gold — because a world of real abundance makes metal ordinary and makes knowing precious (Wealth, Abundance, Value, Ephemeralization).

So the gathering is an opening move of the whole game. Not preservation for its own sake: taking up what has already been worked out, by every people that worked it out, so that nothing has to be discovered twice (The House of Wisdom, ReHarvesting the Great Traditions, Convergent Streams of Discovery, Weaving vs. Starting New).

And it belongs to no one tradition. There is no air, water or soil belonging to a creed, and there is no inheritance of wisdom belonging to one either (Commons, Meta Unity of Meta Diversity, Welcoming The Stranger).

The hard edge is the honest one: gathering what belongs to everyone is exactly what extraction also says it is doing. What distinguishes them is consent, attribution, and whether what is gathered comes back — which is the whole content of the difference (Consent, Attribution, Honoring Lineage Without Lineage-Capture, Extraction Of Wealth).
