Progressive Illumination

One lamp lights a radius and leaves the rest in shadow. Many lamps, held together, light more than any of them could alone — and the light is cumulative rather than competitive.

The image comes from a line the canon takes seriously: your word is a lamp unto my feet. A lamp is not the sun. It illuminates a circle and leaves the edges dark, and the honest response is not to insist your lamp is the sun but to gather more lamps.

Applied to reading, this means no single translation, articulation, or tradition suffices, and that this is not a defect to be fixed. Each rendering contributes a different contour: one carries poetic depth, another balance, another strict fidelity to the source. What one blurs, another sharpens. Held together they produce an expanding radius rather than a contradiction — different hues of the Good, different resonances of the Beautiful, illuminating the same object.

Its companion move is circumambulation: walking around a sacred thing to see it from angles, on the premise that truth is too large to be taken in from a single viewpoint (Dialogos, Levels of Abstraction). Illumination is what circumambulation produces; the walking is the method, the cumulative light is the result. Beside them stands the test that keeps the gathering from becoming mere accumulation — Empirical Resonance, the degree to which a given rendering actually aligns with lived experience.

And then the harmonization. The canon's picture is a tuning: the Source is the composer, the original speaking is the score, and the various renderings are instruments, each capable of bringing the notes to life in its own way. What is sought is not the one correct instrument but the fuller sound.

The chapter says of itself that it generalises: the method worked out on one canonical text is a pattern for approaching the whole human canon. That makes this a reading discipline for the whole library, not a note about translations (Foundational Literature, Weaving vs. Starting New).
