Ontological Shock

What happens to a person, and to a people, when the pillars of their understanding — history, science, religion — are unmasked as partial truths or as deliberate veils.

It is not the shock of learning a new fact. It is the shock of learning that the frame the facts were held in was wrong: that the account of where we came from was edited, that a field of knowledge was steered, that an institution trusted with the sacred was also managing it. What gives way is not one belief but the floor under a whole set of them, and with it the ordinary confidence that the world is roughly as described.

The canon is direct about the two outcomes. The same revelation either fractures a collective psyche or ignites its rebirth, and which one happens is not determined by the content of the revelation. It turns on preparation — whether there is a story large enough to receive the new information, a body of people to hold the person while the floor is replaced, and a way forward that does not require the old frame (Story, Cell, The Way).

This makes it a design constraint rather than only a feeling. Anyone who intends to unveil anything is responsible for the landing: what is said, in what order, to whom, and with what accompanying. Disclosure without a container produces casualties and then a backlash that closes the door for a generation (The Great UnVeiling, Disclosure tier, Guidance).

It is distinct from the trauma the canon names elsewhere. Trauma and the engineered use of it describe harm done to a person to control them; ontological shock is the injury of finding out — the cost of the veil coming off, borne even where no one intended harm. The canon's counsel is to treat the shocked with the care given to the wounded: pacing, company, honesty about what is not yet known (We Do Not Know), and the plain statement that the ache of it is passage rather than pathology (The Refining, Coming Home).
