Sensing comes before understanding

You will feel what this is long before you can say what it is — and that is the right order, not a deficiency in you.

A person meets something true and recognises it in the body first: a loosening, a rightness, a sense of having come home to something they had no words for. The words arrive later, and they arrive unevenly. Someone may play the Game well for a season while still holding half its vocabulary loosely, and someone else may define every term and have felt nothing. The first is further along.

It is load-bearing because it is the pace at which a way actually spreads. Insisting on comprehension before participation builds a seminary: a small, literate, self-confirming group that cannot be joined without a course. The alternative is not vagueness — it is sequence. Let a person sense, let them act, and let the words find them exactly when their meaning becomes that person's need (The vocabulary ladder, Learning By Doing).

It stands as the counter-law to the ladder and not against it. The ladder disciplines the builder: hand every word you use. This disciplines the walker: do not wait until you understand. Both are true at once, and a body that keeps only one of them either overwhelms newcomers with unexplained language or holds them at the door until they pass an exam nobody meant to set (The grandmother test, Overwhelm).

It also names what to do with the feeling of not-yet-understanding. Overwhelm on first contact is a signal that something Real has been touched, not a verdict on the toucher; the answer to it is the wise right next step, never the demand for mastery. And the honest form of not knowing is said out loud — We Do Not Know is a sentence the Way keeps precisely so that nobody has to pretend (Shoshin).
