Whole

A living unity — something that is genuinely one, and not merely a heap of parts.

Wholeness is perceived before it is analysed. The receiving half of the mind takes in the whole directly; the differentiating half then breaks it into parts so they can be handled. Both are needed, and the discipline is the return: having used the parts to map, come back to the whole with better understanding, never mistaking the parts-list for the living unity it describes (Perception · Mind · Sensing comes before understanding · Mapping · The Living Gradient).

Every whole is also a part. The cell is whole within the organ; a sovereign is whole within the Circle; and each flourishes as itself precisely by participating in the greater whole — all the way up the holarchy to ØNE, within whom all inter-exist (Holon · Holarchy · Sovereignty At Every Scale · InterExistence). Even sacrifice runs on this pattern: as cells sometimes yield for the wellbeing of the greater body, so beings freely give for what exceeds them — freely, never by command (Sacrifice · Higher Order Functional Unity · Consent).

And wholeness is a gradient, not a status. A personality becomes whole as its competing drives integrate into functional unity moving toward one worthy aim (Motivational States · Integration · Worthy Goal). A community becomes whole as its members cohere without ceasing to be themselves (Coherence · Circle Coherence · Meta Unity of Meta Diversity). A work becomes whole when nothing essential is missing and nothing foreign remains (Quality · Prune · Gaps Not Yet Closed).

To heal, at every scale, is to make whole again — the words are one word. That is why repair and completion are the same act here, and why a body's healing is not sentimental but structural (Healing · Regeneration · Reconciliation · Atonement).
