Learning By Doing
How the Pattern actually lands in a body: real questions, real projects, real consequences.
The learner ceases to be a vessel filled by an authority and becomes the active investigator of reality. That is the transition this names, and its test is consequence. Doing an exercise teaches the exercise; doing the thing, where it matters whether it works, teaches the thing — because reality answers back in ways no instructor thinks to, and what is learned under consequence is retained in a way that what is learned under assessment is not.
It is also the only route into the kinds of knowing that cannot be stated. Judgement, timing, the feel of a situation going wrong — none of these transfer in sentences, and none appear without repetition against something real. Types Of Knowing is the reason; Praxis is the loop; Apprenticeship is the form where someone who can already do it stands close enough to catch the fall.
In the Game the arrangement is already built, which is worth noticing because it means no separate curriculum is needed to begin. A Cell chooses a real Quest — one actual thing, for one season, that it can point to afterward — and the Quest does the teaching. Commitments are made and kept or not, which teaches reliability faster than any exhortation. The week's gap is examined, which teaches honesty. The season is reviewed, which teaches design. And the whole of it is done with the same people repeatedly, which is what allows correction to be received rather than defended against.
Two safeguards keep it from being merely throwing people in. The work must sit in The Zone Of Optimum Development — hard enough to require growth, not so hard that failure teaches only that one cannot do it. And it must run inside a Zero Blame Environment, because learning from consequence requires that consequence not be punishment: cause is sought in the set-up, not in the person, and Every Defect Is A Gift.
