The Five-Fold Pattern of Mastery
One cycle under every kind of practice — understand, cultivate, transmute, empower, align — so that learning one domain teaches how to learn the next.
Understand. Meet the thing as it actually is, not as it is wished or as it was labelled. Without this the rest is choreography (Perception, Sensing comes before understanding).
Cultivate. Practise it, daily, with discipline. Capacity grows by patient repetition and by nothing else; body and spirit learn at their own pace (The Practice Cadence, Discipline, Learning By Doing).
Transmute. Convert the raw into the refined rather than suppressing it. Fear into courage, grief into love made visible, anger into protective fire, confusion into clarity — not denial and not bypass (Mastery Of Emotions, Transformation And Conformation, Grief, Anger).
Empower self and others. Offer the matured capacity outward. Self-mastery that is never handed on is private piety, and teaching the thing deepens the teacher's own grasp of it (Pass The Flame, Apprenticeship, Cohort-Learning).
Align. Fold it back under the larger thing — the Goal, the agreements, the wise right discernment — so the person is a conduit rather than a proprietor of the capacity (Alignment, Conduit, The Goal).
Three properties make it usable. Sequential when learning, spiral when practising: first time through in order, and then again from the top at a higher resolution, understanding deeper because of the last cultivation (The Sacred Spiral — Not a Circle, Shu-ha-ri). All five, every turn — and each omission has its own failure: understanding without cultivation goes inert; cultivation without transmutation accumulates discipline and no wisdom; transmutation without empowering becomes private mysticism; empowering without aligning drifts into serving the gift itself (Recognitions Are Not Titles To Be Sought, The Dark Initiate Failure Mode). And at small scale the five are layers rather than steps — one breath can be all five at once.
It is diagnostic where it matters most. When a practice has stalled, the question is not try harder but which of the five am I missing — and usually one is plainly underfed (The gap, Gaps Not Yet Closed, Retrospective).
It is also why the Way claims to be teachable across domains at all: if every domain obeys the same cycle, then someone who has learned the cycle once carries most of the way into the next (General Pattern, Specific Application, The Five Archetypal Ways, Curriculum).

Open: The Card says the same pattern appears elsewhere as four-, six- or seven-fold and that five is chosen for clarity; that is a drafting decision presented as an inheritance. · Nothing distinguishes this cycle from the corpus's other learning cycles, which have different names and different counts.
