The Benediction
The closing word that sends: a blessing spoken over people as they leave, so that the gathering ends rather than merely stopping.
Every gathering that matters has a shape, and a shape needs a last move. Without one, people drift out still holding what was said, the container stays half open, and the week between gatherings carries the residue. The benediction closes it: what was done here is complete, what was said here is held, go well.
It is a sending rather than a summary. The canon's gatherings close in gratitude and then people go out — to a Quest, to a week of keeping their word, to whatever they are carrying. A closing word names that going and blesses it. Consecration is the same move made over a thing rather than a person: this is set apart for what it is for.
It is the counterpart of The Invitation at the other end of the arc. An invitation opens a door and asks for a yes; a benediction confirms that the one being sent is held by the Body they are leaving. Between the two sits everything else. A Body good at welcoming and poor at sending produces people who cannot tell whether they have left.
The office belongs to whoever is holding the room — in the canon, the greeting and the handing of words is the Guide's, and the keeping and telling of what happened is the Bard's.
Its standing in the corpus is thin and should be said: it is named once in the Voice section beside Blessing, has no body anywhere, and no Play invokes it. It sits among a handful of beautiful names — prophesying, the silence that speaks, the benediction — that the canon's own audit marks as ore that should go if nothing calls them.
