The Turn
The weekly gathering: did, gap, will, offer, ask, story, Offering, thanks.
Once a week, the same day and place if you can, an hour or two. Open in silence. In turn, each person says four things: what I said I would do, and whether I did it; the gap, honestly, and what I learned; what I will do this week; what I have to offer, and what I ask of the others. Someone marks The Circle's Scorecard. Someone tells one story. Each person puts something in the middle for The Offering. Close in gratitude.
It is load-bearing because it is the beat. Everything else in the Game is a variation on it: the season is thirteen of these plus a turning; the plan is what the week's promises add up to; the body's whole record is the accumulation of what was said at Turns. A Cell that keeps the Turn through a hard season is a Cell; one that lets it lapse has stopped playing, whatever else it is doing. It is also the same beat in every Cell on Earth, which is what The Heartbeat names: one week, everywhere, so that sheets align, proposals arrive together, and no table is out of step with the body.
How it is played. Keep the hour and end on time, because trust is built at the edges. Check In before the work, so what troubles someone is said rather than carried. Rewrite the bottom of The Questcard and tick last week's boxes in front of everyone. Roll the look-ahead a week: what could stop what is coming from being ready. Make commitments as a person's word, aloud, to people who depend on them. Take the few lines of the week through The weekly door to The Board if you have a wire; if you have none, the box on the shelf is enough. Then Harvest and Close: what we are learning, one appreciation or improvement each, thanks, a closing word.
Nothing in the Turn requires a chairman. The two hosts hold the room and the hosting passes around. A Turn with two people is still a Turn. A Turn that becomes a status meeting has lost the gap, which is the only part that teaches anything.
