Sleeping

The nightly return — a third of a life spent in the one state where a body repairs itself and a mind sorts what the day handed it.

Sleep is not the absence of living. It is where a great deal of the living gets consolidated: tissue is rebuilt, the day's experience is sorted into what will be kept, and the questions carried into the dark are worked on by a part of the mind that does not take instruction. The canon holds it as a practice rather than as a default, which is the point — a practice can be protected, and a default gets spent.

It is load-bearing because it is the most commonly sacrificed input in exactly the kind of life a serious Quest produces. A Cell pushing toward a season's end will trade sleep before it trades anything else, and every faculty the Game depends on degrades first: judgment, Discernment, patience under a Meaningful Objection, the ability to hear what a member is not saying. The Daily Way closes with reflection, gratitude, stillness, and a question given to the mind for the night — a sleep ritual, stated as part of the daily floor.

In play, sleeping is guarded at three scales. A person keeps a closing rhythm and an honest hour. A Circle does not schedule its work as though its members had no nights, and treats chronic exhaustion in a member as a reading to act on rather than a sign of commitment. A Community that builds around shift work, permanent alertness, and lit screens has made a health decision whether or not it noticed. Honesty about time in planning is also honesty about sleep: a plan that only works if everyone stops sleeping is not a plan.

Dreaming is its own concept and its own Card; sleeping is the container dreaming happens inside. The canon marks the whole territory — sleep, dream, and the visionary epistemology around them — as surfaced but not deeply patterned.
