Belonging
The felt side of membership — knowing there is a table you are expected at, and that your absence would be noticed.
Agreements can be written; belonging cannot. It is what a person actually experiences when the arrangements are working: being known by name, being expected, being missed. A body may have a perfect field of agreements and produce no belonging at all, and a body with almost no structure may produce a great deal of it. This is why belonging is treated as its own thing rather than as a consequence of membership.
It is load-bearing because it is most of what holds a person through the hard stretch. Quests fail, seasons go badly, the world outside gets worse; what keeps someone at the table is rarely the Quest and almost always the people. The arithmetic of the work depends on this: the Seed travels hand to hand at the pace of trust, and it is belonging, not persuasion, that a person carries to the next two or three. No one is alone is not a sentiment in the Vision; it is a design requirement.
In the Game, belonging is manufactured by ordinary means, deliberately: the same day and place each week, three to thirteen people by name, the opening silence, the check-in that asks how you are before it asks what you did, the good news heard before the problems, the Offering in the middle of the table, the close in gratitude. Your Home Cell is the Cell that holds you, and Home alone is your own place inside it — a word chosen to name exactly this. Your Carrier never changes. In the System, belonging is what the membrane protects and what the door makes honest: freely entered, freely left, and never carried by anyone who has not chosen to walk.
Its counterfeits are worth naming: belonging that is conditional on agreement, belonging that requires the exclusion of someone else, and belonging that cannot survive a member's departure. Each is a form of capture wearing warmth.
