Circle (as gathering)

A gathering of peers in a ring of trust — faces toward one another, no head of the table — and not yet a Cell.

People have gathered this way around every fire humanity has ever lit. The Circle is the oldest form we have for sovereign beings learning to trust, decide, and build together: the warmth, the witness, the belonging. It asks almost nothing to begin. Three or four people who want to meet are already a Circle, and that is the point of the word — it names what anyone can start on a Tuesday evening, before any commitment has been made and before anything has been promised to anyone outside the room.

What it is not yet is a functioning part of the whole. When a Circle takes up the whole code — covenanting in a Field of Agreements, sustaining itself, choosing a Quest, telling its stories, passing The Flame — it becomes a Cell. The Circle is the form; the Cell is the function. Holding the two words apart is load-bearing in both directions: it keeps Cell meaning something a stranger can rely on, and it keeps the door of Circle wide, so that no one has to promise a season before they have had an evening.

The passage between them is marked. Seal the Circle is the moment the gathered choose one another and the gathering becomes a body; before that, people are visiting, and after it, they are members with a way out that is also named (The Way Out). Circle Coherence is the condition a Circle reaches before it can move as one; a Circle that has not woven coherence will not choose its Quest well.

The word carries an older load across the corpus. The scale ladder in Levels Of Scale names the three-to-thirteen rung Circle, much of the Circle Guide and the Plays say Circle where they mean a body that plays, and the Little Book's fourteen-line page is still called the Season Sheet of a Circle. Read those as the earlier word for what is now called a Cell; when a text means not yet a Cell, it says so.
