Shame

The body's report about standing before others. Four states kept distinct: shame, embarrassment, humiliation, self-consciousness.

Shame is the sense that what is wrong is not the act but the self. Embarrassment is lighter and specific — an exposure in a moment, which the canon names as carrying its own teaching. Humiliation is shame inflicted by another, and the difference matters entirely: the response to something done to you is not the response to something you did. Self-consciousness is attention turned onto oneself in the middle of acting, which degrades the acting; its cure is returning attention to the work.

Read accurately, shame reports a rupture in belonging or in integrity. Read inaccurately it reports that the person is the problem, and a being convinced of that hides — which removes exactly the thing that could repair it. This is why shame is the emotion most likely to break a table: it does not ask for correction, it asks for concealment.

The Body's structures address it directly. Cause is sought in the set-up rather than in the person (Zero Blame Environment). The gap between what was promised and what was done is treated as the primary source of learning, and is reported without blame. Every Defect Is A Gift means the one who names a miss is doing the Body a service rather than confessing a fault. Apologizing gives a clean move for genuine wrong, so that repair has a shape and does not require humiliation.

Humiliation deserves its own line. It is not an emotion a Body may use. Shaming as an instrument of correction produces silence, not change, and the Pattern's refusal of coercion reaches it.

The discipline remains: feel fully, read accurately, respond to what is reported — and where what is reported is a real wrong, repair it and let the shame go.
