Recognitions Are Not Titles To Be Sought

Standing is conferred by the body that witnessed the walk — and the pursuit of it is itself the tell that something has drifted.

Four recognitions, each named with the body that confers it. Advancement is conferred by the person's own Circle and Elder, who have watched the readiness arrive. Elder standing is conferred by the community or bioregional council, after extended faithful service. Lineage standing — the recognition that someone is carrying the tradition forward in their own way — is conferred by the wider craft's witnessing across years, by nobody in particular and everybody over time. A council seat is conferred by whatever body has standing to confer it: the Circle for its own coordinator, the community for its council (Wise Eldership, Belt Progression, Wisdom Council).

The rule underneath is that recognition tracks witnessed reality rather than claim. Nothing here is applied for. The faithful walk, and the recognitions arrive as the walking is observed — which also means they can be wrong, late, or absent, and the canon does not pretend otherwise.

The drift test is the sharp edge: the pursuit is a tell. Someone who seeks recognition for its own sake has already begun to drift, and the seeking is evidence before any other symptom appears. The reason is structural rather than moral. A capacity held for the standing it confers is a capacity that will eventually be used to protect the standing (The Dark Initiate Failure Mode, Institutional Idolatry).

Two things keep this from becoming a rod for keeping people down. Recognition is conferred by the body that watched, not by a distant authority, which keeps it close to the evidence (Brought-by · witnessed-by). And it is revocable and rotating wherever it carries authority — a recognition is not a possession (Term Limits And Rotation, Impeachment, The Act Of Release).
