Communication Debt

The accumulated cost of what was not said — and of what was said where it could not be found again.

Every unsaid thing is borrowed. The constraint noticed and not logged, the doubt felt and not voiced, the decision made in a corridor and never written down, the concern raised once and never answered: each saves a minute now and charges a week later, usually to someone who was not in the room. Like other debts it compounds quietly, and the body that carries the most of it is usually the one most certain that everything is fine.

It is load-bearing as a name for a failure that otherwise has none. A body can point at a missed date, a defect, a lost member; it rarely points at the conversation that did not happen, because nothing records an absence. Naming the debt makes it accountable, and the instruments that pay it down are already here: The Record so that what was said is findable, decision records so reasons are not re-litigated by accident, The Heartbeat so there is a standing hour in which the unsaid has somewhere to go, and Bottom Line Up Front so what is said is received.

It is also why the record is written for readers who are not present. A line anyone in the Cell can read and correct, in plain words, costs a little at the moment of writing and saves the whole body from rediscovering the same thing. The measure of good communication here is not volume: every word spoken may improve the silence it breaks, and unread is not the same as unimportant.
