Flow

The continuous, regenerative movement of energy, information, and value through the Body — the state in which a living system is actually alive.

Flow is the condition, and stoppage is the disease. In a body, blood that pools in one organ is a clot; in an economy, value that accumulates at one node is the same event under another name. This is why the Pillar treats circulation as a first-order good rather than a means: what moves produces, what sits does not, and a system's health can be read off the smoothness of its movement more reliably than off any total.

Three things flow, and they are usually mentioned together because they fail together. Energy — hours, effort, presence, care. Information — what was learned, what is stuck, what is needed; Communication Debt is the name for what accrues when this stops. Value — money, materials, tools, access, the products of work. A body that moves goods but not information builds the wrong things efficiently. One that moves information but not resources knows exactly what it cannot do.

Flow is also the production discipline, not only the economic one. Integrated Delivery optimizes the movement of work through a whole rather than the busyness of its parts; Theory Of Constraints says the rate of the whole is set by its tightest point, so improving anything else is motion without throughput; Waste is defined as whatever consumes capacity without moving the Goal along. Every one of these is a statement about flow. Value itself is defined as throughput — flow of the Goal, measured at the point of use.

What obstructs flow is worth naming, because the obstructions are usually deliberate. Enclosure stops Knowledge as commons. Hoarding stops resources. Hierarchy that must approve everything stops information. Centralization Of Power stops all three at once. The counter-moves are structural: commons, Voluntary Tithing, Transparency, Subsidiarity, and a weekly rhythm in which offers and requests cross every membrane in the body.
