Empirical Resonance

The test applied to any rendering: how far does it actually align with the lived experience of the people who carry it?

When several articulations of the same thing are in hand, something has to decide between them, and the canon refuses two of the usual answers. Not authority — the most credentialed rendering is not thereby the truest. Not internal elegance — a formulation can be beautifully consistent and still describe nothing anyone has met. What is left is the evidence a community actually has: does this rendering ring true against what these people have lived through, worked with, suffered, and tested?

Empirical is doing real work in the phrase. The reference class is experience, not sentiment. A rendering that resonates only because it flatters, or only because it is familiar, has not passed; what has passed is a rendering that keeps proving accurate where a body's life presses against it. And resonance is doing work too: this is a matter of degree, not a pass/fail gate. Renderings are more or less resonant, and the more-resonant one is preferred without the less-resonant one being destroyed (Resonance, Current Best Articulation).

Its second half is collective. Different communities and cultures, each with its own experience and its own pressures, will find different facets of the same text load-bearing — so a multiplicity of readers amplifies individual discernment and builds a wider wisdom than any reader could reach. This is why the canon reads in company and why it keeps foreign lamps rather than extinguishing them (Progressive Illumination, Cross-Cultural Pattern Translation).

It is also the honest limit of the whole method. Resonance is evidence, not proof; a whole community can resonate with something false, which is why the test sits beside the others rather than above them — coherence with the Logos, the ordinary fruit over time, and the willingness to revise (Navigating Towards Truth, Everything Is Current Best Understanding).
