The Light of ReMembrance

What is actually handed over when the Flame passes: not information, but a memory lit again — something that was already yours before anyone gave it to you.

The distinction it draws is the reason it has a name. A person can be given facts, arguments, a book, a method. None of those is what the telling claims happens when the telling works. What happens, on this account, is recognition: something rises that was not installed, and the shock is the shock of homecoming rather than of learning (The ReMembering Stance, Remembrance, Empirical Resonance, Gnosis).

Which makes it the honest answer to a hard question. When the Flame is passed, what exactly is passed? Not membership, since there is nothing to join. Not agreement, since nothing must be believed. Not the book, which is only a carrier. What passes is the lighting — and the reason it can pass at all is that it was already there in the one receiving it (Pass The Flame, The Flame, Divine Spark, One of the Ones of the ØNE).

Two things follow for anyone doing the handing. It cannot be given to someone who does not have it, which is why the instruction is to go to the two or three whose faces came to mind rather than to a crowd (The First Few, The Invitation, The pace of trust). And it cannot be taken, which is the corpus's account of why the whole long night failed in the end: everything else could be edited, seized or switched off, and this could not (The Divine Whisper, Kontrolle, Sovereignty Of Consciousness).

The phrase is used once, in bold, in one telling, and nowhere else — which is thin for something load-bearing. It is set down because the thing it names is what the central move of the whole Game actually transmits, and a corpus with a word for that and no page for it has left its most-used act unexplained. A second reader is wanted here more than on most pages (Second reader, We Do Not Know, Patterns Pending Articulation).

It is yours, as it is mine — which is the only claim the page makes that could be checked, and it is checked by noticing whether anything lit.
